Depression & Fibromyalgia

About Fibromyalgia with Co-Occurring Clinical Depression

Fibromyalgia is a medical condition characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain. The widespread pain and tenderness is usually accompanied by chronic fatigue, sleep issues, memory problems, and migraines. The chronic pain and cognitive difficulties that comes with the condition leaves many susceptible to mood disorders like Major Depression. Fibromyalgia and clinical depression are one of the most common sets of co-occurring disorders we see at the Delray Center for Integrative Medicine.

Treating Fibromyalgia & Depression:

IV Ketamine infusions are a cutting-edge therapy for treatment-resistant depression (TRD). Ketamine provides a powerful antidepressant effect that has treatment recipients feeling better almost immediately. Ketamine infusions are administered intravenously to maximize the power and immediate effect of the medication. Along with our standard IV infusions, the Delray Center for Integrative Medicine is also the exclusive provider of the Rodriguez Method of Ketamine Infusions (RMOKI), developed by our founder and medical director, Raul J. Rodriguez, MD. RMOKI is a dual level Ketamine infusion, administered both intravenously as well as subcutaneously. The result is a synergistic effect that lasts much longer than normal Ketamine infusions. In addition to treating depression, Ketamine infusions can ease the painful symptoms of fibromyalgia as well.

Ketamine infusion therapy is highly effective for treating fibromyalgia and depression, especially when paired with other treatment services available at the Delray Center for Integrative Medicine, including:

Psychiatry & Medication Management:

The good news is that there are a number of medications available that can help to manage the long-term symptoms of fibromyalgia. Certain antidepressants and anti-seizure medications, such as Neurontin and Cymbalta, have proven effective in treating many of the symptoms related to this disorder. While these may not treat the condition alone, paired with Ketamine therapy they can prove useful. It is important to be evaluated by a psychiatrist who specializes in depression and depression-related mental health issues. The psychiatric team at the Delray Center for Integrative Medicine can provide an accurate diagnosis, advise you on your treatment options, and provide follow-up care and medication management.

Acupuncture:

Acupuncture has been shown to alleviate some of the symptoms of fibromyalgia, and is also used to treat chronic pain, anxiety, and stress. Acupuncture is an ancient system of Chinese medicine that involves placing fine needles at different points across the body. It is believed that acupuncture alters blood flow and neurotransmitter activity, thus improving muscle pain, headaches, and other symptoms common with this condition. Acupuncture is part of the holistic suite of services offered by the Delray Center for Integrative Medicine, which also include cupping, IV vitamin therapy, gua sha, and more.

Massage:

The Delray Center offers massage therapy provided by a licensed massage therapist experienced in working with individuals suffering from depression and anxiety. While massage therapy is a great way to reduce stress and anxiety, it has a number of other benefits. Massage also helps to increase your body’s production of natural painkillers, and the production of other neurotransmitters that help uplift mood.

Behavioral Therapy:

Behavioral therapy approaches, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) are recommended for people with depression, fibromyalgia, or both. CBT and DBT teach individuals vital skills for managing personal discomfort, distress, and regulation of emotions. At the Delray Center, our team of licensed, masters-level therapists are intensively trained in a number of therapeutic approaches that can help with sadness, anxiety, stress, and cognitive difficulties. Our program offers individual psychotherapy, individual skills training, and group therapy.

Neurofeedback:

Neurofeedback, a specialized form of biofeedback focused on improving brain function, is a treatment service available through the Delray Center’s Brain Science division. Neurofeedback can be paired with Ketamine therapy to improve both short-term and long-term mood and pain issues. Neurofeedback focuses on the monitoring and adjusting of brain waves using an EEG (electro encephalogram). With this technology, participants train their brains through different exercises in order to become more well-regulated. Neurofeedback can reduce stress and anxiety, decrease fatigue, uplift mood, and improve cognition.
